‘Buika’, The First of my Influence Posts. Jazz, Flamenco, Latin, Fusion

The first of the musical influence posts. I’ll keep these short, so you can listen to the music and maybe go diving through yourself.

‘Loca’ was the first track I found from Buika. I was hooked on the section with the vocal chants (about 1.35), I looped and studied a lot of this track.

Now onto this video. It’s interesting being able to watch people play the music, obviously, within most dance music it’s not possible. I watched this video for days. There’s something about how this sounds, you’ve got people playing in a sparse room - you can definitely hear the room on the recording, and I love that. We’re bringing the architecture in as another player. And it’s not over-engineered to the point where it sounds artificial again.

After this, I went on to watch Flamenco guitarists strumming techniques, which is a whole other world. But, like all these influences, I’m adding them as spice to my work, not emulating them. More importantly, I realised I wanted as many clapping tracks holding the rhythm as I could.

You’ll be able to hear the influence when you listen to ‘Sunrise’, coming 5th August.
