“Ice Cream Fame” is a series of 24ct gold figurative busts depicting four contemporary celebrity figures as ice creams.
The image of celebrity is the object of worship within the “religion” of consumerism. Celebrity is idolised as the image of success, perceived as being amongst the highest rank in society.
Humanity has a tradition of dedicating art to figures that are considered to be important. Art dedicated to figures of cultural and societal importance serves as a display of social recognition. Art dedicated to figures of religious importance displays one’s devotion. Celebrity exists within culture and society but amasses a devoted following.
Gold is the most important and culturally significant material throughout the entirety of known conscious man. It is the socially designated material of the elite and object of religious significance. It is coveted by man and has played a fundamental role in determining the value of currency, and consequently the value of everything.
Ice cream is a food that is enjoyed in hot weather and requires an artificial environment to remain desirable. This is parallelled in the impermanence of celebrity and its need to be maintained.
Ice cream is a relatable object, it has a globally recognisable form and silhouette. Unlike gold, ice cream remains accessible regardless of social status or wealth.
‘Ice Cream Fame’ is a small snapshot of this culture, there is an infinite number of potential ‘flavours’.
